General Information
A general introduction to the connoisseurship and appraisal of furniture, ceramics, silver and glass. The course includes an overview of the evolution of form and style including relevant visual images and appropriate terminology as well as criteria for making value judgments. Students will apply the 14 "Points of Connoisseurship" as developed by the Winterthur Museum and will be expected to be familiar with the Getty ID system of identification and documentation of art objects. Students will review basic examination techniques and be expected to apply critical appraisal skills such as qualitative ranking, classification, and writing object descriptions. Students are expected to be familiar with fundamental appraisal theory and techniques and be prepared to apply them. Textbooks (required) Lanmon, Dwight.
