Enrollment Information
Please note: Information below pertains
to ASA scheduled courses only. Contact appropriate university registrar
for university partner offerings.
- Registration Process
To register for a course, complete the
form found on this Web site or at the back of the Education
catalog or register online at /courses.
Total tuition and fees must be submitted with the completed registration
form. Course registrants must sign the form to indicate that they
understand and accept the ASA education program prerequisite policy.
Registration is official when you receive a confirmation letter
from ASA.
Airline Ticket Information
Do not buy nonrefundable tickets until
you receive your official course confirmation from ASA International Headquarters.
ASA cannot provide reimbursement.
- Schedule
Most courses consist of three 9-hour days from 8:15 a.m. to 5:30
p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Class hours on Sunday are
reserved for examinations, which vary in length (see course descriptions).
The intensive schedule is often supplemented by evening homework.
University schedules may vary. Seminar schedules also vary; see
individual descriptions for more information.
- Tuition Rates and
Fees
Tuition rates and fees are listed with course descriptions in
"Get Dates and Locations." Please note a $50
late fee for registrations will be charged if registration fee
is not received 21 days prior to the course start date.
- Your Tuition May
Be Tax Deductible
All expenses of continuing education (including registration fees,
travel, meals and lodging) taken to maintain and improve professional
skills may be tax deductible, according to Treasury Regulation
1.162-5. Consult your tax adviser.
- Methods of Payment
Payment in full by the course start date, in U.S. dollars only,
may be made by check or money order payable to the American Society
of Appraisers; VISA, MasterCard, American Express and government
purchase orders also are accepted. Copies of checks sent via fax
are not acceptable.
- Enrollment Substitutions
Substitutions are permissible if ASA has been notified in writing
prior to the first day of class. It is the responsibility of the
original registrant to transfer to the substitute registrant,
in writing and in a timely manner, all course-related information,
including textbooks, schedules and pre-class assignments. Substitute
registrants will be obligated to complete and sign the standard
course registration form as part of the on-site registration process.
Any prerequisite education and experience is applicable to the
substitute registrant.
- Class Enrollments
Most classes are limited in size. Enrollees are registered on
a first-come, first-served basis. If the number of registrants
for a class reaches the limit, additional registrants will be
placed on a waiting list and immediately notified of such status.
Courses may be cancelled at the discretion of the director of
education.
- Cancellations and
Transfers
There is no charge for cancellations received more than 30 calendar
days before the first day of the course; after that deadline,
registrants will be charged $100. Registrants choosing instead
to "roll" their registrations to a subsequent course will be charged
only $50.(The cancellation fee for both the 15 and 7 hour USPAP courses is $50; the rollover fee is $25). For that fee, ASA will transfer the registration and
consider the registrant's tuition paid in full. Please note: Any
intervening tuition increases are the responsibility of the registrant.
All cancellations or substitutions must be requested in writing
and may be faxed to Member Services at (703) 742-8471. If ASA is not notified in advance of the start date of the course, the registrant will be considered a "NO SHOW". There are no refunds for NO SHOWS.
- Lodging/Meals/Transportation
Course participants are responsible for making their own lodging
reservations and for costs associated with their lodging, meals
and transportation. At most locations, special group lodging rates
have been negotiated and a reserved block of rooms will be held
for up to 21 days before the course start date. At the three-week
point, hotels usually release the room block for sale to the general
public. Hotel reservations generally may be cancelled without penalty up to 48 hours before
your arrival date.
- Classroom Surroundings
The on-site course administrator will endeavor to ensure that
course participants enjoy ample lighting, space, ventilation and
freedom from distractions. Prohibited activities include smoking,
tape recording and using portable telephones or personal pagers.
Classroom use of laptop computers will be at the instructor's
discretion. Voice amplification for instructors is provided when
necessary. Refreshment breaks are provided; stretch breaks are
encouraged. Dress is casual for students. Please contact the ASA
on-site coordinator if you have any complaints or require assistance.
- Textbooks
The required textbooks and their prices are listed during the
registration process on the ASA Web site. Textbooks can be ordered
prepaid from ASA by check, VISA, MasterCard, money order or American
Express, or online during the course registration process. Textbooks which are not available through ASA are generally available through online and retail bookstores.
- Calculators
All participants in these courses are expected to use a calculator
in class. Real property courses require a six-function calculator
(HP17BII recommended). Machinery and equipment courses require
a calculator capable of doing exponential calculations. Business
Valuation courses require a financial calculator able to perform
annuity, compound interest and present value calculations.
- Pre-Course Preparation
Most courses require preparation prior to arrival at the course
site and the first class meeting. Pre-reading assignments are mailed to registrants with their official course confirmation letter. Participants are expected to complete these assignments
and bring them to class.
- Examinations and
Grading
The only authorized examination period at a Principles of Valuation
course site is on the scheduled exam day for that particular offering.
Participants are not permitted to take course examinations at
any other time at the course site. Examinations are given on a
pass-fail basis, and the passing grade is 75 percent for all courses.
Course examinations are not returned to participants. All pass-fail
notifications are mailed within two weeks after the conclusion
of the course. Exam results are not given by telephone. Participants
owing any course-related fees to ASA or who have not met the course
prerequisites will have results withheld until such accounts are
settled in full.
- Retaking Examinations
Participants who have failed course examinations, or have "incomplete"
status for a course, have one year from the conclusion of the
course to retake or complete the relevant examinations, for a
fee of $110. Retakes may be completed, by prior written arrangement
only, at ASA course sites, at ASA open group examination sites;
or at ASA International Headquarters in Herndon, Va., or they
may be set up individually at convenient locations. Arrangements
must be scheduled 30 days in advance; call (800) 272-8258, ext.
113, and ask to set up a course retake exam or mail the Retake/Challenge
Application to ASA, Accreditation Services, 555 Herndon Parkway,
Suite 125, Herndon, VA 20170.
- "Challenging" or

without attending the course. Challenges may be completed, by
prior written arrangement only at ASA examination sites, or at ASA International Headquarters
in Herndon, Va., or they may be set up individually at convenient
locations. Please note that only BV Candidates are eligible to challenge a BV course. The price for challenging a course is equal to the
course tuition. Member and nonmember rates apply. Course manuals
