ASA Provides Smart Travel Tips for Buying Jewelry
February 8, 2013 (Reston, VA) American Society of Appraisers members Juanita Addeo, ASA and Barry Block, ASA have created a short list of traveler tips to remember when buying gems and jewelry abroad, particularly when traveling on a cruise where several ports of call are common.
The quick read provides many suggestions on how consumers can protect themselves when buying jewelry away from home. “As appraisers, we see many clients with items of jewelry bought while on destination vacations, including quite a few from cruise ship vacations. More often than not, the story does not have a happy ending.”
Key suggestions include doing research on the ports of call that are on your itinerary and paying particular attention to avoid any stores that have earned a reputation for duping consumers. In addition, it mentions key “red-flags” consumers can look for that may signal that the store they are working with might not be on the up-and-up including: outrageous claims of value; money back guarantees that seem too good to be true; and seller contracts on the back of sales slips.
