Equivalency Program

If you think you may qualify for equivalency in any of the following areas, call the ASA accreditation coordinator at (703) 478-2228 for more information.

Real Property
If you have an SRPA, SREA, SRA, MAI, RM, RES, CAE, IFAS, IFAC, SR/WA, IFA or ARA, your education and proficiency requirements in ASA are satisfied. All you have to do is complete the application/documentation processes and fulfill the USPAP and ethics requirements.

You may also benefit if you have completed coursework at any of the associations listed below:

American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers (AIREA)
(now the Appraisal Institute)
American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA)
Appraisal Institute (AI)
Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC)
Columbia Society of Real Estate Appraisers (CSREA)
International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO)
International Right of Way Association (IRWA)
National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers (NAIFA)
Society of Real Estate Appraisers (SREA) (now the Appraisal Institute)

Business Valuation
If you have five years or more of experience as a CPA, CFA or CBI, ASA will award you one year of full-time-equivalent experience toward your accreditation. That means you need only one more year of full-time-equivalent experience to meet the experience requirement for the Accredited Member (AM) designation (2 years total). To complete the appraisal proficiency requirement for a designation, you may either take the accreditation examination or take the four Principles of Valuation courses. In addition to experience and proficiency, other requirements to achieve a designation are to take and pass ASA’s ethics examination, take and pass a 15-hour USPAP course and exam, and submit two appraisal reports.

If you have a CBV designation, you have satisfied ASA’s education and proficiency requirements and need only have the required experience for accreditation as either an Accredited Member (two years) or an Accredited Senior Appraiser (five years); complete the ethics examination, USPAP course and exam; and submit two appraisal reports.

Completed coursework with any of the following associations may be counted toward your appraisal proficiency requirement for an ASA designation:

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)
Association of Investment and Management Research (AIMR)
Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV)
Institute of Chartered Business Intermediaries (ICBI)

Call ASA for information regarding the specific courses you have taken.

Personal Property
If you have a designation from the International Society of Appraisers (ISA), you may be able to apply the appraisal education requirements from that designation toward your ASA designation. Call ASA for details.
