ASA Designations

Accreditation in the society is based on appraisal education, experience, intensive written examinations and submission of acceptable appraisal reports.

Accredited Member (AM) or Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) - Having completed the requirements for accreditation, a Candidate will advance to an AM designation or, with more appraisal experience, an ASA designation. The requirements are described in detail under "Accreditation" and in the Guidelines for Professional Accreditation booklet. A member's designation is associated with the specific discipline and specialty in which he or she has been examined. Some members are accredited in more than one discipline or specialty.

Fellow (FASA) - Fellowships may be bestowed on Accredited Senior Appraisers (ASAs) by the society's International Board of Governors in recognition of outstanding service to the appraisal profession or the society.

Master Gemologist Appraiser - In order to use the Master Gemologist Appraiser® certification mark, the individual must:

  1. Have Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) status in the society;
  2. Be a Graduate Gemologist (GG) from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or hold the designation Fellow, Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA);
  3. Own or be employed by an owner of an ASA-registered gemological laboratory;
  4. Pass the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test for color discrimination; and
  5. Successfully complete the Master Gemologist Appraiser Program in residence.

Master Government Appraiser (MGA) - Some members of the Association of Governmental Appraisers, before it merged with the American Society of Appraisers, held the designation MGA. Members who elected to retain this designation are so noted. The MGA designation is no longer awarded.
