BURTON H. MARCUS, Ph.D., ASA
Summary of Background and Experience
Burton H. Marcus, Ph.D., A.S.A., is Vice President of Stonefield Josephson, Inc. He was previously the founder of a business valuation and consulting firm located in Southern California. Before devoting his total efforts to business valuation and consulting in the mid 1980s, Dr. Marcus was a full-time member of the faculty at the Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Southern California where he holds emeritus status.
Dr. Marcus has served as a consultant to regional , national, and international organizations and has had in excess of 25 years of consulting and research experience with major corporations. He has written numerous articles related to his research and is the author of several college textbooks. He is a frequent speaker and reviewer, was formerly consulting editor for Little, Brown & Co., and was director of several educational and association programs. Dr. Marcus has and continues to serve on the Board of Directors of several Southern California and national organizations. Dr. Marcus is a senior member of the American Society of Appraisers, A.S.A., within the Business Valuation discipline. He is a member of the American Society of Appraisers subcommittee on education, and holds the office of Treasurer of the Los Angeles Chapter. He has qualified and testified extensively as an expert witness on valuation and business related matters.
Several cases which are representative of the work performed can be summarized as follows.
(1) Spraylet v. International Marketing, Los Angeles County Superior Court. The case involved misappropriation of technical process data. Dr. Marcus represented the plaintiff. Client obtained what was at the time the largest verdict ever returned under the Uniform Trade Secret Act.
(2) C3 Enterprises v. George W. Carter, et. al., Los Angeles County Superior Court. Dr. Marcus represented the defendant. Plaintiff sought to recover $3 million for fraud in connection with the sale. Defendants were awarded over $350,000 in attorneys fees against plaintiff.
(3) Eminent Domain Case. Dr. Marcus represented the condemning agency. Demands for loss of goodwill and business interruption damages exceeded $8 million. Settlement was for $1 million.
