From the Chair
I hope that all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! My e-letter this month is a little earlier than usual because of a couple of things that have come up that are important.
Nominations for the BV Committee Being Accepted
The Nominating Committee of the BV Committee is beginning the selection process for this year’s BV Committee member elections. There are several slots that will be opening up this year (as of July 1, 2013), so we need as many qualified candidates as possible to consider for nomination. A nominee must hold the ASA (or FASA) designation and be in good standing with the ASA. Although not a requirement, nominees with some history of service to the BV profession within ASA or other societies are preferred. Examples of service include course instructor, course developer, chapter officers, conference committee or standards committee members, authors or speakers on BV topics, etc.
As you know, the BV Committee is the volunteer body that oversees the education, standards and accreditation of BV professionals within ASA. The BVC meets face to face twice a year and holds periodic teleconferences. Subcommittees and task forces within the BVC meet in person or by phone as needed. If you would like to be considered, or know someone else who would make a good candidate, please e-mail me a brief CV including valuation organization participation and your reason for wanting to serve on the BVC by January 15, 2013.
2013 Conference Suggestions
Although you may not have been selected to serve on the conference committee, that does not mean that we don’t need your help. The conference committee is meeting in January and is currently collecting ideas for topics and speakers for the conference. This can include suggestions for multi-discipline sessions as well, since we will again be co-locating with the International Conference. Don’t complain that the conference isn’t worth attending – make it worth attending by sending your suggestions for topics, speakers or both to either me or Bryce Erickson, conference chair.
Research Project
The BV Committee has been approached by several professors at Seattle University to participate in a research project regarding the issue of fair value judgments. Due to the importance of valuation in fair value accounting, the BVC has agreed to contact the BV membership of ASA and ask for their participation in the survey. The results of the survey will be summarized in a working paper that is expected to be published in June and the professors have agreed to submit an article to Business Valuation Review regarding their research. We have also suggested that the conference committee invite those involved to present their findings at the 2013 conference. I hope that many of you will choose to participate in this survey.
3rd Exposure Draft of 2014-2015 USPAP
The Appraisal Standards Board of The Appraisal Foundation has released the 3rd exposure draft of the 2014-2015 version of USPAP. Comments are due by January 25, 2013.
Congratulations to Richard Wise, FCBV, FASA
I received a press release that stated the following:
RICHARD M. WISE, FCBV AWARDED THE QUEEN ELIZABETH II DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL
The Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators (CICBV) announced that Richard M. Wise, FCBV has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, presented by His Excellency David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.
Richard has had much involvement with the Institute since his admittance into membership in 1972. As past president of the Institute from 1986-1988, Richard was head of the CICBV Board of Directors that presides over the Institute. He was also the recipient of the CICBV’s Communicator Award in 2005, 2007, and 2010. The CICBV Communicator Award is granted each year to a deserving CBV who has undertaken communication activities and actions that have had a beneficial impact on the promotion of the business valuation profession to non-CBVs.
“Richard’s long standing career in the field of business valuation and his involvement with the Institute makes this award very special to us,” said Allister Byrne, FCA, President & CEO of the Institute. “We are very proud to know that one of our Member’s achievements have been recognized in this way.”
Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada and to honour Her Majesty for her service to the country. The medal was created to recognize “significant contributions and achievements by Canadians”.
For those who do not know Richard, he has been actively involved in the BV community of ASA for many years. He currently serves on the BV Committee, and is the Chair of the BV Standards Subcommittee. Congratulations Richard!
And Finally…
As this is my final e-letter of the year, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone receiving this e-mail, along with their family and friends, a safe and happy holiday season. In addition, I wish you all a prosperous and very Happy New Year!
