  • Annual Board Report-Seattle Chapter
Seattle Chapter Meeting June 20, 2006

Annual Report from the Board President: Diane Anderson Murphy Vice President: Mark Mitchell Secretary: Steve Krom Treasurer: Jeremy Burnstein

As we prepare to bring in new officers, your 2005-2006 Chapter Officers are pleased to present the following report of our activities over the past year.

1.Diane Murphy & Jeremy Burnstein researched the possibility of having a booth at the annual estate planning event in Seattle offered through the Bar Association. Although this did not occur as we discovered the booths are limited & sell out quickly. We found that it costs about $1,000 for a booth & national has a table top display we can use. As it is a 2-day event, we would require significant participation from the membership to staff this.

    2. Jeremy Burnstein continued to pursue a sponsorship opportunity that Jenny Sims, our 2004-2005 chapter secretary, had looked into to benefit members of our Spokane Branch with the Appraisal Institute. Although this did not come together we made some connections which may be helpful to future officers.

    3. Diane Murphy recruited Jack Sparks to serve as our BV interviewer for new candidates or advancements. Steve Krom has served as MTS interviewer. Janet Stevens has served as Gems & Jewelry interviewer. Mary Sudar will assist with fine arts. These members donate an hour or so of their time to assist with this process. As a result, we added four new accredited members during the term & are currently working on one more. These are:

Name Discipline Status Change Completed Jeremy Burnstein BV Candidate to ASA November 2005 Pamela Flynn MTS Candidate to ASA November 2005 Wayne Fjeld BV Candidate to ASA February 2006 Scott Gordon MTS Candidate to AM June 2006 Marianne Partlow PP/Fine Arts Candidate to AM Received June 2006

We would also like to acknowledge George Goundry (BV) and David Jackson (MTS) who are new members.

    4. Building on the initiative begun by Janet Stevens, our 2004-2005 chapter president, Steve Krom activated our chapter website in 2006. He has learned the process of how to put events & info there to facilitate better communication with our membership. Please visit http://www.appraisers.org/seattle/ to keep up to date on your local chapter events. Steve has volunteered to continue to serve the chapter with website maintenance for the next year.

    5. Mark Mitchell coordinated a meeting with the Seattle Estate Planning Council at their December 2005 event. Although we were unable to invite the full chapter membership, several board members were permitted to attend & represent ASA. Jeremy Burnstein & Diane Murphy prepared a membership directory which was handed out to most of the attendees.

    6. Steve Krom cancelled our chapter post office box which cost $70 per year & contained only junk mail. Diane Murphy was responsible for picking up the junk mail monthly prior to the cancellation.

    7. Steve Krom contacted the MTS chapter members by telephone to assess interest in a discipline-specific networking event last fall. Steve had positive initial feedback to the idea but as he was setting the date, he found that the interest had waned & cancelled the event.

    8. Jeremy Burnstein began planning for the BV technical event in the fall of 2005. Ultimately, our speakers who we had hoped could present in the first quarter of 2006 were not available until May. The event was well attended. Jeremy had also looked into co-sponsorship with the Wash Society of CPAs which they declined.

    9. Mark Mitchell was responsible for the Young Lawyers networking event last month. We received some comments about the old appraisers & young lawyers but it was a successful event for those able to attend.

    10. Diane Murphy and Janet Stevens proctored local exams for several members during this session.

    11. Diane Murphy coordinated the local chapter Dex ad. For those who have not gone through this experience, you should know that it is a miracle that the books get published. The information was provided to Dex electronically which they translate into their system. We found numerous errors & information we did not provide was returned to us in their proof which is not legible. We had to coach them on pricing as the cost estimate did not include all of the components of the ad which we would be charged for later. Diane is in the process of collecting the share from individual participants to ensure we have adequate funds when the chapter is billed later this month.

    12. Steve Krom and Diane Murphy began to research a local updated USPAP session for members. We were hoping to have a speaker today to give us an overview of the changes but the scheduling did not work out. We would like to discuss the members’ wishes to the new board on what to implement, if anything.

    13. Following on the model from the San Francisco chapter, Diane Murphy began to formulate a plan for offering an education sponsorship by discipline. Mark Mitchell will describe the plan briefly which we will leave to the new board to implement.

    14. Janet Stevens established a local phone number for our chapter to receive local referrals rather than using the 800 number which routed them to national. Today, Janet continues to answer this telephone line & refers prospects to the chapter members.

    15. Jeremy Burnstein is out of town & has the full treasurer’s records. A brief report follows: we started out with $5,400 in our bank account on July 1, 2005 & have almost $6,400 as of May 31, 2006. Our phone & other misc. bills amount to < $100 per month. The chapter’s share of the Dex ad is slightly more than that of the participating members, ~$600. We reduced the member cost for the recent BV luncheon to begin to use the chapter funds & provided a $200 per person speaking gift to the presenters. Our plan is to provide the education sponsorship funds to chapter members & maintain sufficient funds to provide or co-sponsor education events. Should the membership wish to direct the new board to use the chapter funds differently, I am certain they can accomplish that. Based on our current roster, our projected chapter revenues are $3,100 during the next fiscal year before the deductions for the national marketing effort ($630) & directors’ and officers’ insurance ($??).

    16. Our new officer slate for 2006-2007 is as follows:

Name Office Discipline Wayne Fjeld President BV Peter Lyster Vice President BV George Goundry Secretary BV/MTS TBD Treasurer TBD

We will be voting on these officers later this week. An e-mail containing a brief bio will be included for those not in attendance today, plus the ballot. I would like to acknowledge my own superior recruiting skills in bringing these fine people to lead us through the next year. Hopefully, we can fill in the blank for the treasurer role today as the Board was unable to do so.

    17. Diane Murphy & Mark Mitchell have served the chapter for two years & we’ve worked hard. You can see the effort that Steve Krom & Jeremy Burnstein put in over the last year. I will serve as an advisor to the board as needed, & Steve Krom will continue to keep our website growing. The outgoing board will meet with the new officers to transition information at the next board meeting. As you can see, the board & other members have volunteered their time to take care of specific items to share the effort. We need volunteers to keep things rolling along. So if you receive an e mail or request from the chapter officers to help out with an event please consider giving a bit of your time.

    18. Finally, regardless of what you received on the e-mail from Greg Gilbert of the Portland chapter, THE SEATTLE CHAPTER IS NOT DEAD!
