ASA to Offer Personal Property Principles of Valuation Courses Online

by Jennifer Aguilar | Dec 20, 2021

The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) announced today the complete series of personal property Principles of Valuation courses offered in two online formats.

The four-course series covers fundamental appraisal content and theory and provides the foundational education required for personal property appraisers seeking ASA accreditation or for experienced appraisers looking to earn CE credit. The courses also provide information on the latest approaches and best practices for designated personal property appraisers interested in augmenting their valuation skills, or for compeer professionals who are interested in expanding their knowledge and skills.

All ASA-accredited members (AM, ASA, FASA) who would like to attend these courses can receive a 50% discount. To find out more, please email education@appraisers.org.

Participants can choose to complete the Principals of Valuation series over the course of several months or in an accelerated 4-week offering in August. The four-course series consists of:

PP201 – Introduction to Personal Property Valuation provides individuals wishing to become appraisers of personal property such as fine art, decorative art, books, automobiles, etc., with an introduction to the profession and basic concepts necessary for appraisal practice. Participants will learn about general valuation theory, basic appraisal terminology, appraisal processes, ethical concerns of the appraiser, professional standards (USPAP), and much more. Available online January 31 – February 11, 2022 or August 3-6, 2022 or available OnDemand.

PP202 – Development of a Personal Property Appraisal: Research and Analysis leads participants through the appraisal process, beginning with the identification of the appraisal problem and continuing through the determination and performance of the scope of work needed to reach a conclusion of value. Expanded valuation terminology and a detailed overview of market research and analysis methods will be covered. Available online March 14-25, 2022 or August 10-13, 2022.

PP203 – Communication of a Personal Property Appraisal: Report Writing presents participants with the groundwork needed to effectively communicate an appraisal as a written report. Guidance will be provided on how to organize a document that supports a logical argument for value and how to comply with reporting requirements of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and IRS. Participants will use terms they acquired in PP201 and the methodology learned in PP202 to complete an appraisal and prepare the appraisal report for review by the instructor. Available online April 25 – May 6, 2022 or August 17-20, 2022.

PP204 – Personal Property Valuation: The Legal and Commercial Environments introduces students to legal and regulatory issues that impact the work of personal property appraisers. Applying the concepts learned in the previous courses, participants expand their understanding of professional standards and the ethical requirements of an appraiser. The class also focuses upon research and analysis needed to conclude opinions of Fair Market Value for appraisals with the intended use of gift or estate tax or for charitable contributions. Further insight into the auction market, the insurance industry, and how tort law affects appraisers is covered in this class. PP204 also examines the legal court precedents on which many appraisal practices and regulations are based. Available online June 13-24, 2022 or August 24-27, 2022.

The online courses will be presented via Zoom and are taught by a live instructor. Students will meet virtually with instructors, engage in discussions and group exercises as needed.

Registration is available online at www.appraisers.org or by calling (800) 272-8258.
