Webinar Course Description
This webinar will examine an oft-overlooked facet of the
art market offering a brief overview of frame design and fabrication
(Renaissance-Early 20C) and provide an understanding of both European and
American frames designed by or for artists as well as the fabrication techniques
employed especially circa 1800-1920. The significant role of frames in the
commerce of art will be explored and many images of the framed artworks of
specific artists who played a significant role in the design of their frames (Copley to Mondrian) will be shared.

Suzanne Smeaton is a pioneer in the study and scholarship of period frames,
framing fine art for museums and collectors for over 40 years. For some 27
years she was employed as Gallery Director at the noted frame gallery of Eli
Wilner & Company in New York City. Suzanne works with public and private
clients, private dealers and art consult-ants. An author on the topic of
frames and American frame history, her publi-cations include essays in The
Gilded Edge: The Art of the Frame (2000), an es-say on frames in Life's
Pleasures The Ashcan Artists' Brush With Leisure 1895 – 1925 (2007), and an
essay about the re-creation of the original frame on Emanuel Leutze's
"Washington Crossing the Delaware" for the Bulletin of the Metropolitan Museum
of Art. Suzanne is a frequent lecturer and instructor for museums, appraisal
organizations and art appreciation groups across the country. Suzanne is a
certified member and on the Board of Directors of the Appraiser’s Association of
America.
