Intangible Asset (IA) Specialty Program

ASA’s Intangible Asset (IA) education is leading the valuation profession forward.  ASA offers a comprehensive course in intangibles valuation and awards the only Business Valuation Intangible Asset Specialty Designation requiring evidence of competence in the valuation of intangible assets.

The Need for an Intangible Asset (IA) Appraisal Specialty

An understanding of intangible assets and their impact is required for many finance and valuation professionals as intangible assets have become increasingly important to business success and value globally.  Increases in price to book value multiples of public companies reflects the greater role intangibles now play in value creation.

In addition to the increasing importance of intangibles, requirements to demonstrate technical expertise are also on the rise.  Valuation experts can fail Daubert challenges if they do not demonstrate the competence required to serve as a valuation expert.  In addition, the SEC has noted the importance of professional credentials and expertise for those performing valuations, and IRS requirements for a qualified appraiser include specific education and experience levels.

Relevance of an Intangibles Education

Financial reporting valuations are one of the most frequently cited drivers of intangible asset valuations. Many appraisers may value intangibles for tax valuations for transfer pricing (IRC 482) or other tax reporting purposes, and others focus on litigation assignments. For these appraisers, intangible asset valuation expertise and/or the knowledge of elements of intangible asset valuation theory can be key in developing and presenting a value opinion.
