Mr. Clayton provides a personal as well as a professional service to his clients. He makes use of his academic training to research and prepare his reports. He travels to the client’s location, inspects and examines each item, analyzes the object, researches comparable work in the marketplace, and writes a detailed report in accordance with the Uniform Standard of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). The appraisal fees are based upon an hourly rate plus expenses and are never based upon the value of the object being appraised.
Mr. Clayton’s appraisal business has been developed through personal referral and face-to-face contact with families requiring appraisal of their household contents, primarily for estate planning and settlement and insurance purposes. He has evaluated complete household contents as well as selected individual items. He is also a consultant to insurance companies, law firms and private collectors. Unlike auctioneer-appraisers, dealers and liquidators, he will not purchase items that he appraises for resale but he can refer sellers to reputable sales agents.
Mr. Clayton serves on the Personal Property Committee and the Budget and Finance Committee of the American Society of Appraisers, Inc. In July 2008, he became a Member of the Society's Board of Governors.
