Barry S. Block is a highly respected member of the jewelry industry. He has been actively involved in the Jewelry Business since 1967 and a full time Professional Appraiser of Gems and Jewelry since 1989.

Mr. Block opened the first U.S. based Jewelry Judge in Long Island, New York in 1989. His appraisal practice has grown to be one of the most successful Independent Professional Appraisal Offices in the U.S. and today is the model for “The Jewelry Judge” licensing program, a Network of Professional Jewelry Appraisers throughout the Country.

Mr. Block’s gemological education has earned him the Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). His appraisal education has earned him Certified Senior Member Status from the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers, the Accredited Senior Gemologist title from the Accredited Gemologists Association, the Accredited Senior Member status from the American Society of Appraisers and the Registered Master Valuer title from the Master Valuer Program. These, coupled with the required advanced gemological and appraisal training and testing, have earned him the title of Master Gemologist Appraiser®, a title that must be recertified every five years.  He was the first person to hold this title in the State of New York. With offices and gemological laboratory in Garden City, N.Y., his office is the Jewelry Judge Licensing programs headquarters and training center.

Mr. Block has been retained on numerous occasions as an expert witness by the Nassau County District Attorney's office, as well as by other attorneys throughout the Country, to appraise jewelry for the purpose of determining the value for prosecution or defense; determination of value for State and Federal inheritance taxes and equitable distribution in the matter of divorce. His appraisals are accepted and preferred by all major insurance companies, as well as by jewelers and others businesses to determine the proper price to pay or receive for jewelry.  Other references are available upon request.

Mr. Block maintains a current data file for all his past appraisals for a period of 5 years.  His library includes authoritative appraisal manuals and current price indexes, as well as reference books and trade periodicals, along with many published articles he has written.
